We can offer entry into hospitals providing care to the poor across northern India and across rural Africa. Hospitals require a broad range of technical equipment, simple medications and training services for their staff. On a visit to a hospital in Raxual, India, I observed an eye surgeon removing cataracts for free. The hospital could not afford to give their clients interocular lenses, so instead they got a pair of impractical thick glasses. The surgeon expressed her deep frustration that for as little as $20 per eye she could give a client back their sight by inserting an interocular lens when removing the cataract.
There are numerous village clinics providing educational training for parents of new children, immunisation centres, basic medicines and feeding programs for malnorished children. These clinics provide a basic, though much needed services with a focus on prevention rather than treatment.
HIVAids is a major pandemic, particularly in sub-saharan Africa. People suffering in the final stages of HIVAids are often stigmatised by their community and neglected when they need care the most. HIVAids Home Based Care programs provide patients with access to medical services and better nutrition to prolong their lives. Many sufferers have no real concept of what is happening to them while their bodies waste and their communities turn away. Home based care services provide far more than physical care, they provide empathy, friendship and at times spiritual guidance.
